According to residents, clouds started gathering over the city in the morning and by noon the city was blanketed with a sandstorm, which subsided around 2pm and was followed by light to heavy rain until 5pm.
“The city was cloudy since this morning, but all of a sudden there was a strong sandstorm after 12 noon. The winds continued till 2pm when it started raining. There was continuous rain in the city till 5pm. From 4pm to 5pm, it rained really heavy along with thunderstorm and lightning over the city,” said Waleed Al Balushi, a resident of Al Kuwaitat area. The suburbs also witnessed light to moderate rain throughout the day. Some of the remote areas like Al Rowdah, Al Yahar, Al Khaza, Al Khatam and Al Wathba were under cloud the whole day with strong sandstorm and light rain continuing from noon to 5.30pm. According to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology, the combination of moist air coming from the Oman Sea with high temperatures on land resulted in the formation of convective clouds over the eastern and southeastern regions, resulting in heavy precipitation. Hafeet Mountain recorded 33.6mm of rainfall and Al Ain International Airport registered 5.2mm of rain.
