Rains bring respite for residents

Monday began as a hazy day, but the skies opened up later in the evening with showers across Dubai. Residents returning home from work were surprised by the rains, but welcomed the temporary respite from the heat.

The showers followed a sandstorm that filled the atmosphere with dust, reducing the visibility considerably.

Residents and readers from Rashidiya, Karama, Al Quoz, Al Nahda, Al Qusais and Jumeirah, were among those who called in to report the brief showers, which lasted for about 15 minutes in some areas. The dust did not settle after the spell and hung heavy in the air.

The National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) forecast hot and hazy weather being partly cloudy over some areas in the day on Tuesday. It said there is a ‘‘chance of towering clouds” by afternoon over eastern and some internal areas.

‘‘Winds will be light to moderate, freshening at times causing blowing dust,’’ the NCMS said. It said relative humidity will increase during night and early morning over some coastal and internal areas. The sea will be moderate to light over the Arabian Gulf and moderate to rough at times over Gulf of Oman, according to the forecast.

The NCMS said more rains are expected in internal areas and warned people to stay away from wadis. — news@khaleejtimes.com
