Samba Sidney Ngwana is a member of Dubai's growing cycling community who can be seen riding the Metro with his Hummer bicycle kept folded beside him.
The Cameroonian national moved to Dubai in 2012 and works as an event management coordinator-cum-personal trainer.
Though he used to ride since childhood, Ngwana made it an essential part of his life after coming to Dubai. "I found it the cheapest and healthiest way of commuting," said the 27-year-old.
Rain or shine, Ngwana pedals nearly 30km a day on his way to work and back home, even after taking the Metro in between.
Once he started cycling regularly, his passion in it as a sport grew and he joined other riders in the city for cycling events. "Riding is now an important part of my fitness regime, as well," he said.
Summer months are really hard to cycle over here and obviously Ngwana's dark skin has gone darker in the past three years.
But that has not stopped him from riding his stylish bike. And he is looking forward to the opening of more cycling paths in Dubai. "The RTA (Roads and Transport Authority) is doing a good job in creating cycling paths. But, we need more tracks along the city roads," he said.
Ngwana also wants other motorists to be more considerate to the cyclists on the streets. "We do not have indicators to show which side we are turning to. We have to use our hand to signal others. But many motorists do not care for cyclists. They need to pay more attention and give way to cyclists."
Living in Dubai has been an enriching experience for Ngwana, who feels the city makes its residents grow more ambitious and chase their dreams. "You see the way things are here. You will feel very ambitious to push hard and get what Dubai has to offer. It is really expensive here, at the same time it is very promising. Most people come here to work and chase their dreams."
And for Ngwana, he has found his love of his life in Dubai and he is happy chasing their dreams together.- sajila@khaleejtimes.com
