A driver died and his passenger, a popular television presenter, sustained serious injuries in a seven-car crash on Dubai's Shaikh Zayed Road on Tuesday.
MBC TV presenter Shahad Ballan suffered multiple fractures, including a broken pelvis, as a speeding car crashed into three stationary vehicles on the side of the highway. The police had to use hydraulic cutters to rescue Ballan, who was trapped in the rear seat of her car.
Colonel Adil Al Suwaidi, director of the Jebel Ali police station, said Ballan's driver had stopped the car due to a faulty tyre and the car behind them also managed to brake in time to avoid a collision. However, a third car hit the two cars. It was a minor accident and the police instructed the three motorists to move the cars to the side of the highway.
A speeding fourth car crashed into the stationary vehicles, after which three other cars rammed the crashed vehicles.
Ballan's driver was killed on the spot.
The speeding motorist who is believed to be responsible for the fatal accident has been referred to the Dubai Public Prosecution for further investigation.
