Three Pakistani men have gone on trial in the Court of First Instance on the charge of assaulting a South Korean man on the street and robbing him of Dh 133,000.
Public prosecution records show the accused - aged between 28 and 30 - attacked the victim, while he walked to a money exchange office in the International City on May 31.
They snatched his handbag containing the cash as well as 5 million Iranian toman, a bank card, a mobile phone and a passport.
The complainant, who is a manager, said the Dh133,000 the defendants robbed belonged to his tourism company.
"I had just converted an amount from dollar into local currency. I asked the company's driver to drop me at another exchange office to deposit the money - salaries of employees - into the staff bank accounts."
The complainant added: "However, shortly after the driver dropped me, I was surprised by a man coming from behind trying to snatch the handbag I was carrying, from my hands. As I tried to stop him, he punched and kicked me. Another man stepped off a car and came to the suspect's help. They managed to rob the bag and fled in their car."
The manager told the prosecutor that there were three men in that car. "My driver was parking the vehicle when I was being robbed. None at the scene stepped in to stop the assault."
He said he had a receipt dated May 31 that proved he had just converted $136,000 into dirhams at 1:00pm when he was attacked.
He identified two men at the police station as the one who pounced on him first and the person who drove the car after carrying out the robbery.
A police sergeant said they arrested one of the defendants in Al Qusais industrial area on June 15. "We caught him at around 5pm. He did not put up any resistance and admitted he took part in the robbery. He confessed he had planned with his accomplices to target the customers of money exchange offices."
The same accused admitted to the police that he got Dh15,000 as his share and sent some of it to Pakistan.
The next hearing is scheduled for November 22.
