SUV driver jumps 12 red lights at 160kmph, hits barrier in UAE

Sharjah - More than ten police patrols pursued the reckless motorist.

A 28-year-old reckless motorist was arrested after he jumped 12 red lights while being chased by police patrol. The man has been referred to the criminal court.
The accused - a GCC national - was driving a Prado at 160kmph and almost knocked down two people and nearly crashed into three vehicles on the highway during the night last month, according to the Sharjah traffic police investigation record.
Upon being alerted, a police patrol deployed in the industrial area chased the speeding car, which was heading towards Sharjah from Ajman.
The driver was asked to pull over, but he refused to respond to police orders and ran 12 red lights. The motorist was accompanied by another man from the same nationality, who was sitting in the front seat.
Police operations room dispatched 10 additional patrols to arrest the driver. His car veered off the road after hitting a cement barrier. When a patrol officer got off to bring the accused under control, he tried to drive his vehicle and run over him, which forced the officers to fire at the car tyres to stop him from escaping. The officers later managed to handcuff the motorist and his companion and took them to the police station.
The accused confessed to his crime and claimed that he was trying to flee the patrol. The second accused said he didn't resist the police officers at the time of arrest.
The accused were referred to the criminal court, which adjourned the hearing to next month.
A top Sharjah Police official said that the Sharjah Police continuous its crackdown on reckless drivers, which increase during winters as they carry out stunt shows during this time. The police said that since the beginning of September, the patrols deployed on the highways have seized more than 30 vehicles for reckless driving.
