The Sharjah Municipality has saved 66 per cent electricity in all public and residential parks by adjusting the lighting time from 6pm to 10pm.
Thabit Al Turaifi, director-general of the Sharjah Municipality, said that the civic body also used LED lamps in the parks, which contributed to power conservation and went a long way in saving money.
The municipality launched the plan to save electricity in its parks, municipal facilities, buildings and service centres last year. He added that the rationalisation of energy consumption comes as part of the policy adopted by the municipality to cut the cost of wasteful use of electricity and drive to reduce carbon emission, as well as environmental pollution.
He stressed on the municipality's continuous effort to find innovative solutions to contribute to rationalisation of energy consumption that can bring about sustainable development.
Hassan Abdul Razzaq, director of projects management at the municipality, pointed out that the civic body has implemented a number of initiatives and plans to save energy, including cutting the running time of electric lighting in all the city's parks, as well as replacing the traditional lighting in a number of parks with energy-saving LED. The curtailed lighting has resulted in a 66 per cent reduction in electricity consumption in parks. The LED lights in Nouf, Al Qayran, and Al Faiha parks have brought the power consumption down by 50 per cent.
He pointed out that the municipality signed a contract with a company to light the parks by using solar cells, for lighting and charging telephones.
The municipality also replaced the traditional lightning in Birds and Cattle Markets with LED, which contributed to slashing the power use by 62.6 per cent. It also replaced 80 per cent of traditional lighting with LED in the building of the rental regulatory department and 50 per cent in the public health clinic.
He explained that the traditional 36-watt power lamps in the basement of the main building of the municipality have been fully replaced by 18-watt lamps, resulting in a 50 per cent reduction in the energy consumed.
He added that the municipality's main building was equipped with the best specifications of the green buildings represented by the modern systems in ventilation, lighting, thermal insulation, air outlets, natural lighting and other light-electric systems that reduce energy consumption.
"The municipality has urged employees to switch off the lights and disconnect power from unused devices after the end of working hours," he said.
Specialised staff have been assigned the job to confirm that this is being adhered to, in order to raise awareness of the employees.
The municipality also introduced the building management system (BMS) in order to optimise the operation of air conditioning and ventilation, and the automatic separation of power sources in the building
