A policeman was charged by the Sharjah Shariah Court of First Instance on Thursday for killing his Moroccan wife. The court then adjourned in order to assign a lawyer for the Omani husband who said he cannot afford a lawyer and asked for mercy as he had to take care of his child.
On October 22, the operations room of the Sharjah Police received information that a woman had died in a residential building in Al Nahda area, Sharjah. A police team comprising CID and forensic experts rushed to the site and found the husband, M.J.A. in the apartment near the body of the woman. He said his 25-year-old wife, A.B. had died an hour before.
The police found some bruises on the woman's body indicating that she had been beaten up. The body was moved to the General Department of Forensic Medicine of Sharjah Police to conduct an autopsy and to investigate the cause of death.
During police investigation, the 35-year-old husband, who worked with the Dubai Police said that two days before the incident, when he returned home after midnight, he found his wife in a drunken state. He lost his temper and beat her up. She fell on the floor and started crying, but did not lose consciousness, he added. She then went into her room.
Two days later, he went back to his house at midnight to check on her and found that she had high fever and was shivering.
"I rubbed her neck and chest with Vicks and gave her water. When I came back after one hour I found her dead," he said. That was when he called the police.
When asked if the wife had suffered from any illness, the suspect said that she had been asthmatic. However, he could not present any medical report to substantiate that. The accused said he had married the woman one year and eight months before and that they have a one-year-old daughter.
The police seized bottles of alcohol from the apartment which the accused said belonged to his wife. He added that he used to consume alcohol but he had stopped and that a friend who was not known to him supplied the alcohol to his wife. He also added that he was fully conscious when he beat up his wife.
