Director-General of Dubai Municipality, Hussain Nasser Lootah, issued the administrative decision in this regard after making amendments to earlier administrative decisions and local order on public health and safety of the community in the Emirate of Dubai, according to a press release issued by the civic body on Monday. “The purpose of the new decision is to replace the text of Article 48 of the original administrative decision,” the municipality said in the release.

Occupational health cards are issued for workers with establishments directly linked to public health. As per the new order, “the establishment should see to it that it submits application to obtain the card within a period of maximum of 30 days from the date of joining of the worker with the establishment for employment as (it) is mandatory to obtain this card.”

“It should also be taken into account that the card shall be valid for one year from the date of issuance, and it should be renewed within a maximum period of 30 days from the date of expiry,” it added.

A senior official from the Municipality told Khaleej Times that the new order was issued to clarify the time period within which the workers are expected to apply for their mandatory health card, which is different from a normal health card issued by health authorities.

Occupational health cards are issued to food handlers in all types of food establishments, salon workers, beauticians, barbers, staff with nurseries and kindergarten, employees of health clubs, fitness centres and spas etc. They receive the occupational health card from the Dubai Municipality Clinic which certifies them to be fit for working in their category of job.

“Department of Public Health and Safety and Food Control Department conduct inspections to ensure that such workers hold valid occupational health cards. Violators are fined depending on the category of their job and the number of offences,” said another official.
