The Fujairah Appeals Court on Tuesday upheld a verdict of a lower court, slapping Dh20,000 fine on a motorist for drunk driving and running over a pedestrian.
According to court records, the case dates back to September this year when a pedestrian was hit by a car as he stood on a roadside kerb. Shocked to see the car charge towards him, the pedestrian tried to dodge it but in vain as the speeding car rode over the kerb and knocked him down.
Luckily the pedestrian escaped with minor bruises.
The car driver, an Asian, identified as A.N (28), was arrested and taken to a hospital where his urine sample tested positive for alcohol.
The police referred him to the public prosecution, which charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol and injuring a pedestrian. He was sent to the criminal court, which slapped him with a fine of Dh20,000. The defendant challenged the verdict it at the Court of Appeals, which quashed his petition and upheld the lower court's ruling.
