A man stabbed his brother to death after a quarrel over their father's car, the Dubai Court of First Instance heard on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Emirati man was arrested with his 23-year-old friend, also an Emirati, who witnessed the incident but failed to report it to authorities.
Both men have been charged with premeditated murder and consuming illegal substances.
According to court records, the accused had an argument with his brother at their home in Nad Al Hamar after the former refused to give him their father's car. The victim then asked to settle the fight with a sword-knife confrontation.
Using a knife, the accused attacked his brother, stabbing him several times over different parts of his body.
After their third brother intervened to end the fight, they carried the victim to a clinic at Nad Al Hamar. Both defendants then fled the scene and got rid of the tools used in the crime.
The police arrested them in Nad Al Hamar later that day.
Forensic reports showed that the victim succumbed to injuries in his stomach. He also sustained injuries in the neck, chest and left thigh.
Their 57-year-old father had confirmed to prosecutors that the brothers weren't on good terms and had multiple quarrels, including the one that involved the car.
A Syrian doctor at the Nad Al Hamar clinic told prosecutors that the victim arrived with major injuries in the stomach and chest. He had a weak pulse. "He wasn't breathing when he arrived, so I called an ambulance to transfer him to the Rashid Hospital," the doctor said.
Further tests showed traces of illegal substances in the urine of both the defendants that confirmed their drug consumption. The police later seized drug items in a car that belongs to the family.
The trial has been adjourned to January 24.
