The maintenance works, which will cost Dh8 million, will take six weeks when the bridges will be closed partially for traffic.

A top official of the Sharjah Department of Public Works, which is undertaking the works, said at a press conference on Tuesday that the department chose this date to start the maintenance works to coincide with the beginning of the summer vacation during which the traffic will be reduced.

The department is also keen to complete the improvement project before Eid in the beginning of September.

Amal Khamees, Head of the Road Maintenance Section, said the works would be completed in two phases, with each phase taking three weeks.

In the first phase, the two lanes on Al Arouba Street towards Al Khan will be closed for traffic. Alternative routes are being provided for vehicles going towards Al Khan.

In the second phase, the two lanes for traffic in the opposite direction will be closed. The department has installed 10 signboards in strategic locations in the city and two on Al Ittihad Road and Emirates Road in Dubai to guide motorists. The signboards will remain in these areas till the project is completed.

The Sharjah Bridge near Rolla extends to 120 metres in length while the length of the Al Khalidia Bridge is 80 metres. The improvement works include repairing of damage caused by daily use.

Amal Khamees said, “The project is very important as the two bridges are located in strategic locations and link the southern side of the Khalid Lagoon with the northern side.

They have great effects on the traffic movement in all over the emirate as they are considered the passing routes for all motorists heading towards the Northern Emirates and coastal areas of Sharjah and also Dubai in the opposite direction.”

Muhisn Belwan, Head of the Traffic Engineering Section, said the department is coordinating with the Sharjah Police to ensure smooth traffic flow in the entire city and direct the vehicles to alternative routes.

The police would deploy traffic patrols throughout the day during the maintenance works. He urged motorists to abide by the traffic instructions and use the alternative routes and also call the hotline number 80086767 for queries or during emergency.
