American expats vote by completing a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) from the State of Board Elections where they resided last before moving abroad. Federal states are required to send out ballots 45 days before a regular election for federal office (most states allow for confirmation of registration and ballot delivery online).
Deadlines for voter registration and absentee ballot requests vary state by state.
Julia Denis, press officer of Democrats Abroad-UAE, said some expats in the UAE have "cast their votes a lot earlier" with some sending ballot stateside as early as last month.
Those who did not receive their ballot in time to return it to the election official may fill out a Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot (FWAB), which can be found on the Federal Voting Assistance Programme or at the diplomatic posts in the UAE. They can also get the election form from the American Business Council office in Dubai or the American Chamber of Commerce in Abu Dhabi. But the ballot should be postmarked November 8 for it to be counted.
Denis said this year's election has "galvanised and mobilised the voters from both sides of the political spectrum". "In fact, a 350 per cent increase has been registered for FPCA request from Democrats alone this year compared to the 2012 election."
