The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) will carry out a major project to transport water between Ajman and Umm Al Quwain. The initial budget for the 15km water supply lines has been set at Dh40 million, a top Fewa official has said.
"The scheme is part of the water security plan in the country which is meant to connect all the water supplies across the UAE," said Mohammed Saleh, Director-General of Fewa.
The project will benefit the residents of both the emirates, he said. "The water will be supplied from Ajman to Umm Al Quwain and vice-versa, as required."
Water shortage woes "will be history" with the launch of this project, he said. "The Fewa will also launch a number of projects in the Nuaimiya area in Ajman."
All old water lines will be replaced with new ones to boost durability and sustainability, Saleh disclosed. "All reports claiming that poor-quality water is supplied in Ajman are baseless, as the Fewa collects water samples and sends them for lab tests on a daily basis to ensure they are free from impurities," he said.
Saleh urged consumers to rationalise power and water consumption. "The Fewa has launched a nationwide strategy for the next three years (2014-2016) to rationalise water and electricity consumption based on three pillars.
"We shall focus on imparting the culture of rationalisation among all segments of the society, enter into agreements with government bodies to support the enforcement of consumption practices, and reconsider tariff."
