“We started rolling out the new prefix "056" to customers from February,” Omar Al Muzakki, Director of Product Marketing, etisalat told Khaleej Times yesterday.
He, however, stated that "056" may never be completely out of stock since people cancel residency and, therefore, numbers keep rotating. But a preferred phone number with the "056" prefix may not be available,” Al Muzakki added.
He also said that the campaign to popularise the number had been launched in February this year. “All customers who visit our business centres and outlets are being informed about the new number.
“However, we also tell them that if they need the ‘050’, they might not be able to acquire a phone number of their choice,” he added.
Al Muzzaki explained that the TRA had okayed the new prefix for one million customers in December. “Since demand for etisalat is huge, we may reach the one-million mark soon, and depending on TRA’s decision, we may either get extension in the subscribers limit or apply for a new prefix. He also said that all facilities available for "056" customers were available for those owning "056"
Currently, etisalats mobile phone subscribers for "056" are 6.8 million. “All new subscribers for "056" will get phone numbers beginning with 6 i.e. ‘0566’,” he explained.
Since February, over 25,000 etisalat customers have been issued the ‘056’ prefix.
The application will be operational from Thursday, August 1
