Dubai Police, one of the most efficient and formidable forces in the world, was set up by a royal decree in June 1956. Over the last 60 years, Dubai Police has become a force to reckon with. Coming under the office of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai Police has a jurisdiction that covers a whopping 4,000 square kilometres.

Considered one of the best forces in the world, Dubai Police has been hailed for its professional conduct and record. It has efficiently kept crime in the emirate in check while cracking down upon criminal activities over the years. Building a strong bond with the community, Dubai Police's community and social outreach programmes have been a resounding success. Not only has this relationship fostered a sense of belonging, but greatly helped in reducing the crime rates in the city.

Making use of modern technology, Dubai Police takes the help of the latest advancements in science in resolving many cases to prevent crimes. The force has a state-of-the-art laboratory, fully equipped to handle forensic-related activities in Dubai. A pioneering force, Dubai Police was among the first in the region to implement law enforcement techniques, including electronic finger printing and DNA testing. It also has the distinction of being the first to use GPS systems to locate stolen vehicles and create a Human Rights Department in the force.

Apart from regular policing and actively fighting crime in the emirate, Dubai Police has other departments like the Dubai Police Academy, which functions as its educational wing. It offers degrees that are equivalent to those of universities. Offering several degrees (including Licence in Law and Police Sciences, Master's in Law and PhD in Law etc.), the academy maintains international standards of teaching.

Kick-starting its 60th year anniversary celebrations, a statement from the force notes, "On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Dubai Police, we hereby renew the force's vows to our wise leadership and the people of our nation to serve, protect and sacrifice oneself for the nation, and maintain its safety, peace and rule of justice. Empowered by highly skilled and professional human cadres, Dubai Police has successfully created partnerships built on mutual respect, transparency and credibility, whether with security bodies or the community, both locally and internationally."

Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Chief of Dubai Police, has sent a message to all of the force's members, congratulating Shaikh Mohammed, on the anniversary of the police force, and reiterated the force's vows to serve, protect and sacrifice for the nation, and maintain its safety, peace and rule of justice.

He noted, "As His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said about Dubai Police on the occasion of its 50th anniversary: 'This is a story of men who were true to what they have pledged to God and did not stray from it. It is a story of instilling security, safety and justice - as a pillar of stability, development and a decent life. It is a one-of-its-kind story in the world of friendship and mutual respect between the police and the community. A success story of the leadership and excellence of the children of the UAE'."
