Through its social media platforms, Dubai Municipality has invited young children to name two rare white cubs that were born in Dubai Safari Park.
Winners will receive valuable gifts and an exclusive visit to Dubai Safari with their parents. A short film showed the two rare male and female white cubs and invited children to choose the right names for them after they were born earlier this month at Dubai Safari.
They are in good health and are taken care of by their mother. The civic body said the cubs are under the supervision of doctors and specialists.
Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said the competition was launched to encourage community participation, engage children with animals and educate them about rare animal breeds.
He noted that since children are an essential segment of the society, they will be targeted through Dubai Safari's different educational and entertainment programs.
Children are invited to send the suggested male and female names to Dubai Municipality's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.
White lions breed naturally in the wild, unlike white tigers. The lions born come originally from Timbavati region of South Africa.
White lions are of the same yellow-brown breed located in South-East Africa as Panthera Leo Krogeri, which is found in most of the reserves in South Africa and in zoos all over the world.
Although rare, white lions have not yet been classified as endangered because biologists still consider them as yellowish browns.

The lions are considered sacred animals by the people of that region, but after Europeans discovered this species of lions in the 1970s, many were taken for education and hunting.
The International Fund for the Protection of the White Lion is campaigning for the recognition of the white lions as part of the lion speciesto protect them under international law.
The Fund estimates that a white lion has a genetic value of no more than 300 lions. In recent years, this type of animal has been returned to the natural reserve at Timbavati in an attempt to reintroduce its genes into wild lions.
Dubai Safari to open before year-end

A Dubai Municipality official told Khaleej Times that Dubai Safari is expected to open before end of this year. "The final stages are finished, and we are waiting to officially open the park when the weather gets better," the official said, noting that the expected date is November.
Dubai Safari is spread over 119 hectares, of which 80 hectares are dedicated for the villages representing different regions of the world and 35 hectares for the Open Safari village. It is expected to house over 3,000 animals of different species.
The project aims to create the best habitat for the wildlife in the world, providing different environments that suit with various animals. It is also aimed at attracting visitors from various parts of the world, using modern interactive methods for viewing and movement to ensure a unique experience. The project consists of a number of key villages, namely: Asian village, African village and the Open Safari Village, in addition to a Valley and Children's Park.
