The Dubai community continued to mourn the shocking demise of Lieutenant-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, who passed away on Thursday of a heart attack. His peers in the police department said the country had lost a great leader, who devoted his to life to make Dubai a safer place.
Major-General Mohammed Saeed Al Marri, Director-General of the Department of Community Services at Dubai Police, said that many people may not know Al Mazeina as a champion of humanitarian issues. "He never rejected the requests from the staff for humanitarian assistance. He was keen on giving training to policemen on how to deal with the public in a civilised manner."
Major-General Pilot Anas Al Matroushi, Director of the General Department of Transport and Rescue of the Dubai Police, said that the force lost an officer who considered the department his home. "Al Mazeina devoted his life to police work and worked hard until the last moments of his life."
Dr Mohammed Murad Abdullah, Director of the Decision Support Centre at Dubai Police, said: "We lost our brother and fellow leader. His dedication to work has been an encouragement for everybody. He worked day and night to protect the homeland and to achieve security and safety for all."
Mohammed Hassan, a police sergeant, told Khaleej Times that Dubai's respect for Al Mazeina was visible, when all the roads in Al Qusais were blocked with thousands coming together to pray for the late police chief. The roads from World Trade Centre and Muhaisnah to Al Qusais were jammed with members of the public and officials gathering for the funeral. The prayers had to be performed separately for six batches of people due to the huge crowds. Such is the love and respect inspired by Al Mazeina among the local people.
