Dh96,000 worth of fines slapped on Ras Al Khaimah outlets

Fines of up to Dh95,900 were slapped against several outlets in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah in September, for flouting rules.

Official records show that RAK Municipality increased its inspection campaigns across the emirate to protect consumers.
Municipal inspectors launched 311 inspection campaigns last month, according to a senior official.

Shaimaa Al Tunaiji, acting manager of the public health department, said 255 of the 921 outlets inspected failed to meet the rules. "They were forced to pay fines as per the type of violation."
One of the erring outlets was shut down, she explained. "Two others were issued warning letters, and 93 were instructed to sign undertakings never to repeat the same violations or be liable to closure."

The total amount of fines imposed on erring outlets hit Dh95,900, Al Tunaiji elaborated. "The RAK Municipality adopts a no tolerance policy against any violations."
The food institutions fined were involved in health and environment violations, she stated. "Up to 4,627kg of food  unfit for human consumption was seized and destroyed."

Thirteen vehicles were also impounded for breaking rules in Ras Al Khaimah, Al Tunaiji disclosed. "Nineteen out of 296 samples of desalinated waters collected from the water desalination stations in Ras Al Khaimah failed to pass the set test."
These samples were collected and analysed by competent staffer members at the central lab of the RAK municipality, she said. "All the desalinated water being offered for sale to must measure up to UAE's standard specifications."
She also revealed that the RAK municipality confiscated up to 297kg of slaughtered birds at the RAK international airport. "Passengers are not entitled to bring slaughtered birds with them for fear of transmission of contagious diseases like bird flu."
