Ahead of World Obesity Day (October 11), an interactive and exclusive Bariatric club meet is being organised by Medeor 24x7 hospital in Abu Dhabi on September 21. The focus of the event will be the positive aspects of bariatric surgery, its advantages and how to choose a surgeon for it.

Dr Toufic Ata, consultant, general surgery and head of bariatric unit at Medeor 24x7 hospital said: "This is the fourth event of the club which was started almost a year ago. This club is for all the patients who have been through bariatric surgery and aims at bringing them all together under one roof to discuss their issues."

So, is bariatric surgery a better option to lose weight, he added: "Logically, if one can lose weight naturally, it is good but if one cannot diet or exercise then this surgery helps reduce weight. We also make sure before the surgery whether the patient is prepared for it or not."

Dina Taji Al Farouki, a fitness expert from Dubai thinks it is important to change from an unhealthy lifestyle to a healthier one. "Bariatric surgery comes with bundle of complications - hormonal balance, small body, loose skin and other psychological problems and nothing is learned in this process. But if one loses weight naturally it helps them understand their body and develop a healthy lifestyle. As an expert I suggest everyone should fight obesity the natural way. Don't diet, learn about nutrition, exercise and I would say avoid surgeries in any form to reduce weight."
