The Sharjah Police have installed 29 new smart radars on various traffic hotspots in the emirate to reduce road accidents and fatalities. These will help monitor the traffic situation and crack down on the violators.
The radars have been put up mostly on highways, including Al Dhaid Street, Malihah Street and Sheikh Khalifa Street.
Major Abdul Rahman Khater, director of traffic awareness and information branch, pointed out that due to spike in accidents resulting in deaths and injuries as well as loss of property, the police are trying ways to rein in the violators. Smart radars and traffic awareness campaigns are some of the ways to bring down the spiralling traffic violations and accident graph, he added.
Director of traffic patrols Majid Al Mazrouei said that the smart radars will undoubtedly reduce the number of accidents as they will target prime violations that cause accidents, including tailgating which is behind over 60 per cent of the mishaps. He said that according to statistics - during the seven months of the current year - tailgating led to 36,020 accidents and 44 injuries. The use of mobile phones while driving and resultant lack of attention caused 20,686 accidents and 57 injuries during the same period.
He said that smart radars will monitor many abuses committed by motorists. People not concentrating on the road while busy on their mobiles while driving will be fined Dh800 and draw 4 black points. Overtaking road shoulder will entail a fine Dh1,000 and 6 black points; not fastening seat belt while driving by the driver will invite Dh400 fine and 4 black points. For tailgating, a penalty of Dh400 will be imposed apart from 4 black points.
