Two more areas in Sharjah will come in the paid parking zone, the Sharjah Municipality has announced. This is to "minimise the misuse of free parking areas and reduce congestion on roads", the municipality said.
The municipality said it received many complaints from residents and office-goers about difficulty in finding parking spaces as motorists from other areas park their cars in free parking spots.
Atif Al Zarouni, director of parking department at Sharjah Municipality, said parking meters have been installed in Al Nabah and Al Shuwihain areas.
These meters will be operational from September 19, he said. "Though a number of people have opposed the idea saying the new paid parking system is an additional financial burden on them, we are trying to find a solution that would help residents find parking spots quickly," he said.
The paid parking system has contributed "a great deal in reducing traffic jams", he said.
Paid parking charges in Sharjah are Dh2 for one hour, Dh5 for two hours and Dh8 for three. Motorists will have to pay to park in these areas from 8am till 1pm and from 5pm till 10pm, except on Fridays and holidays.
Subscriptions for stipulated periods are also available for motorists. The charges are Dh2,300 for 12 months, Dh1,400 for six months and Dh800 for three months.
The subscription allows a motorist to park in any of the paid parking areas. Parking is free of charge for special needs people.
