The costly Russell Crowe saga, which made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, took 5.7 million pounds ($8.2 million) over the weekend, compared with Iron Man’s opening 7.6 million pounds earlier this month.

The picture dispenses with much of the Robin Hood mythology — including his reputation as the man who stole from the rich and gave to the poor — and transforms the hero into a war veteran swept up in political intrigue. Cate Blanchett co-stars as Maid Marion.

“Iron Man 2,” starring Robert Downey Jr as a billionaire with a suit of invincible armour, was down in second place with horror movie remake “A Nightmare on Elm Street” unchanged at three with the tale of suburban teenagers being stalked by killer Freddy Krueger.

Time-warp buddy comedy “Hot Tub Machine” stayed at four for a second week, just above “Furry Vengeance,” down three at five with Brendan Fraser and Brooke Shields fending off forest animals whose homes are at risk from a housing development.

“Four Lions,” a controversial comedic look at a group of British Jihadists and their dreams of glory, was unchanged in sixth spot.

Seventh, down two, was Jennifer Lopez determined to become a mother in “The Back-up Plan,” while DreamWorks’ animated feature “How to Train Your Dragon” slipped one spot to eighth.

“The Last Song” was down a place at nine with Miley Cyrus as a New York teenager reluctantly spending the summer in a small Southern beach town, with “Date Night,” the story of a New York couple finding their romantic night hijacked by unexpected menace, down at 10 from nine.
