The Sharjah Police have clarified that the waiver of fines for minor traffic offences announced in view of the Gulf Traffic Week was not an invitation to commit such violations but a gentle reminder to motorists about the principles of road safety on the occasion.

The waiver was announced as part of the new initiative with the slogan “Our aim is your safety” to make motorists aware that the week was not observed for intensifying collection of fines but to inculcate good road culture and drive home the importance of abiding by the traffic rules to ensure their and other road users’ safety, officers said.

During the Traffic Week, motorists found committing minor offences like blocking the road, unauthorised parking and driving without fastening the seat belt are not being fined but informed about their violation. The waiver does not cover violations committed earlier.

The police urged the motorists to take advantage of the week to find out the major traffic problems, the ways to avoid them and the statistics on accidents including the death rate and nature of injuries suffered by the victims and their causes.
