School transportation conference from today

The first International Conference for School Transportation and Exhibition 2013 in the Middle East and North Africa region starts this morning at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

About 400 people, including top executives, manufacturers of school buses, bus operators, owners of schools, educational and telecommunication providers and surveillance technology manufacturers, will attend the conference.

About 30 speakers from 17 countries are set to deliver speeches in the conference that will see seven panels and four training workshops. Participants in the accompanying exhibition include 30 entities and companies from six countries including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Canada, China, the USA and the UAE.

Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA Mattar Al Tayer, welcomed the participants and attendants in the conference and wished success in improving the school transport sector.

“School transport is one of the key public transport sectors worldwide that lifts millions of students every day,” said Al Tayer. “In view of the importance of this sector, the RTA has regulated the school transport sector which currently has a fleet of 4,000 buses transporting more than a grand total of 131,000 students in the Emirate of Dubai.”

Al Tayer said the total number of school buses registered in Dubai has touched 4,445. The number of drivers who have been issued with school bus driving permits soared from 5,581 drivers in 2010 to 6,695 drivers in 2012, while the number of school bus conductors leapfrogged from 2,568 conductors in 2010 to 5,000 conductors in 2012.

The conference is co-hosted by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the American National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) and will continue till Tuesday.
