Road fatalities came down by 45 per cent while injuries are decreased by 34 per cent, said Colonel Hamad Nasser Al Baloushi, Director of the Peripheral Regions, Traffic and patrols Department of Abu Dhabi Police, attributing the steep fall to the implementations of the police initiatives and the full-fledged traffic safety methods.

“The Abu Dhabi Police carry out activities and programmes to enlighten motorists on the need to abide by the traffic rules and instructions, pay attention to the traffic signboards, avoid sudden lane changes and to adhere to the speed limits,” he said.

He called on all motorists to follow what he termed as “the art of driving manners while on the road” and avoid reckless driving. He also advised them not to pre-occupy themselves with turning on the radio and to refrain from talking on mobile phones while driving. He also urged the drivers to buckle up and stop the vehicle by the side of the road if they feel tired and exhausted.

Colonel Baloushi also asked drivers to drive carefully and reduce speed when approaching traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. “Speeding doubles the rate of traffic accidents. There are laws and intensive deployment of police patrols which deal strictly with those who violate the rules governing traffic safety,” he added.
