Ras Al Khaimah — With over 60 run-over accidents recorded in Ras Al Khaimah last year, the Department of Public Works and Services has built a number of speed humps on busy roads in the emirate.

Official figures showed that 71 people were killed in traffic accidents on the emirate’s roads in 2014 and speeding proved to be the main cause of most of these mishaps.

Col Ali Saeed Al Alkim, Director of the RAK Traffic and Patrols Department, said: “Twenty people were killed and 40 injured in the 60 run-over accidents reported in the emirate last year.”

Col Ahmed Al Sam Al Naqbi, Head of Traffic Engineering at the department, said the new speed humps will curb speeding and save lives and protect properties. “The new speed humps were mainly built on the Gasidat road, which saw 1,244 accidents last year; and Al Jazeera Al Hamra road, which witnessed 1,625 accidents.”

Al Dheit South road saw 1,479 accidents and Al Muntaser road saw 2,234 accidents, he added. “Speed humps are mainly used in residential areas and on internal roads to force drivers to observe the speed limit.”

Ahmad Al Hammadi, Director of the RAK Public Works and Services Department, said many speed humps have been built in the Nakheel area, which sees heavy traffic throughout the day, due to which pedestrians find it difficult to cross the roads.

“Warning yellow traffic signals have been set up on both sides of the speed humps to alert drivers to reduce speed so that pedestrians can cross safely,” said Al Hamadi.

The department is also planning to build new subways and footbridges for pedestrians’ safety, he revealed.
