His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has ordered that the Emirates Road be named the “Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road” in a tribute to General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for his valuable role in advancing inclusive development nationwide.

Shaikh Mohammed said in a post in the micro-blogging site Twitter: “I have issued a decision today to rename “Emirates Road” to “Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed road”.

In another tweet, he added: “I wanted the first decision of 2013 to be related to a character associated with big achievements”.

“Emirates Rd is a vital artery that connects & unites the Emirates as my brother Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed who unites and defends the UAE,” continued the Dubai Ruler.

The Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road is one of the strategic routes in the UAE’s land transport and road network, as it serves an effective pivotal link facilitating smooth flow of vehicular traffic and goods between Dubai and other neighbouring emirates.

Inaugurated in 2001, the 140-km long major artery, 73km of which is in Dubai, is projected to play a major role in the rapid pace of national development and massive urban expansion on both sides, given the steady increase of road users heading to Abu Dhabi from Dubai and other emirates. The road begins in Abu Dhabi and passes through Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain, ends in Ras Al Khaimah.

To cope with the mounting traffic movement, the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai had upgraded and doubled the road’s capacity in 2006 making it a six-lane carriageway to accommodate 12,000 vehicles per hour. —
