The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed traffic improvement works at Marrakech-Rabat streets intersection near Festival City as part of the Sporadic Works and Rapid Traffic Solutions projects. The step enhanced the capacity of the intersection by adding a lane to accommodate the traffic heading to the left from both directions of the intersection, which has boosted the traffic capacity of the street.

Maitha bint Udai, CEO of the RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said: “The Sporadic Works and Rapid Traffic Solutions projects consist of several operational suggestions to ... improve existing roads, intersections and traffic signals, in addition to providing parking spaces, upgrading lighting works in existing and new roads, and protecting the existing utility lines in terms of ducts, extensions and diversions to serve the area in an optimal manner.

“The traffic improvement works at the intersection of Marrakech-Rabat streets included increasing the number of lanes from two to three for the traffic incoming from Dubai Festival City, and heading left to Rabat Street in the direction of the Shaikh Rashid Road, and adding two to three lanes for the traffic incoming from the airport and heading left towards Rabat Street in the direction of the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.”

Improvement works also included adjusting the existing traffic signal and pavements, protecting the existing utility lines, modifying air-conditioned bus shelters at Rabat Street and some improvements at the entrance of the existing petrol station at Rabat Street in the direction of the Shaikh Rashid Road.

Maitha said: “RTA’s improvements works plan until the second quarter of 2015 also includes improving existing roads, and easing traffic congestion in some areas by working out rapid traffic solutions such as widening Baghdad Street between Damascus Street and Beirut Street, widening Amman Street near NMC Hospital, street lighting works at Rashidiya and Nad Shamma, widening the Hissa Street between Al Khail Road and the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, in addition to other improvement works at some intersections.”
