Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, said the company undertaking the construction of Phase I of the Dubai Water Canal is about to complete the diversion of all utility lines. It will start work on the traffic diversions on Shaikh Zayed Road in the direction from Dubai to Abu Dhabi from July so that the diversions are in place by October 25.

Al Tayer announced this during an inspection tour of the Dubai Water Canal and the Jumeirah Corniche. He was accompanied by Maitha bin Udai, CEO of the RTA Traffic and Roads Agency; Nabeel Mohammed Salih, Director of Roads; and Husain Mohammed Al Banna, Director of Traffic.

Al Tayer was briefed on the progress of work on the canal, which is being carried out by the Turkish Gunal company. The Dh500 million contract of the initial phase comprises construction of a bridge on Shaikh Zayed Road, with a capacity of eight lanes in each direction crossing over the canal in a way enabling free marine navigation 24/7. It will also divert routes of impacted roads to ensure integrated traffic movement between the two shores of the canal.

The impacted sector of the Shaikh Zayed Road encompasses about 800 metres and the project also includes diversion of the utility lines as well as lighting and fountain works for the bridge.

Jumeirah Corniche

Al Tayer inspected the progress of work on the Jumeirah Corniche project, which runs along the beach of six residential communities. It starts from the area at the back of the Dubai Marine Beach Resort and extends to the Burj Al Arab Hotel in a 14km-long stretch, rendering it the longest corniche in the emirate.

He was briefed about the progress of work on the project, which was started by the RTA in February last year. The project, to be opened in November next year, is 20 per cent complete.

Besides the added value of the project as another aesthetic destination in Dubai, it also contributes to enhancing the social infrastructure in the emirate, particularly in the field of public health. The project aims to transform the sandy beach into a more vibrant venue by providing aesthetic, decorative and entertainment elements as well as public services to visitors and tourists.
