Dubai - The Dubai Police have issued 8,464 tickets in 2014 to drivers who parked their car in the parking spaces reserved for special needs people and ambulances and in front of the fire exits.
Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of the General Department of Traffic, warned that those who park their vehicles at the space reserved for the specially abled people will get Dh1,000 fine and four black points.
Al Mazroui said the Dubai Police have installed monitoring devices at all the parking spaces reserved for the specially abled people to curb parking violations.
“When a car enters the parking spot, the sensor detects it and starts beeping for 20 seconds. If the car does not leave, the device takes a photo and checks it with the database via 3G to check if this car has a permit. If it does not, it immediately records a fine in the system.” The device is constantly recording video and audio. The device also takes a photo of the vehicle when it’s leaving, to calculate the total time the car was parked in the spot.
The Dubai Police have received a number of complaints against people parking their vehicles in front of fire exits. Al Mazroui said parking vehicles in front of fire exits can be very dangerous in case of a fire breakout.
“Taking a special needs person’s parking space has a psychological effect on them… If people are not willing to protect the rights of people with special needs, then we (Dubai Police) will take action to protect it,” said Al Mazroui. -amira@khaleejtimes.com
