Kuznetsova labours into fourth round

MELBOURNE - Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova needed all her big match experience to dig herself out of trouble and beat German qualifier Angelique Kerber 3-6 7-5 6-4 at the Australian Open on Friday.

Kerber, ranked 118th in the world, looked to be on the verge of a stunning upset when she outplayed Kuznetsova for the first hour before the world number three clawed her way back into the contest.

The French Open champion struggled to find her rhythm in the swirling wind in the late-night match at Melbourne Park, which started just before midnight after Rafa Nadal’s four-set win over Philipp Kohlschreiber lasted more than three and a half hours.

As part of her preparation for the match, Kuznetsova left the confines of the players’ lounge to sit in the stands and watch the men’s contest.

“I did that to motivate myself,” she told reporters. “It is so much better when you see it live.

“It was very hard to play after such a great match they played before, so it was a little bit late,” Kuznetsova said.

Kuznetsova made things harder for herself when she did get on to the Rod Laver Arena with 39 unforced errors in an unconvincing display.

“I did not play my best but she played really well and it took time for me to adjust to her game,” Kuznetsova said.

“I think she’s very dangerous because she’s a leftie. All credit to her, she played amazing and I was lucky to survive.”

Although Kuznetsova was below her best, she was still able to scrape through and avoid joining Kim Clijsters as another third-round casualty.

Kuznetsova will play Nadia Petrova in the fourth round on Sunday after the Russian demolished Clijsters 6-0 6-1 in the biggest upset of the championship so far.

“It was really tough but I’m proud of myself, I was really fighting my way through this match,” she said.
