“MySpace Music and imeem share a common vision and commitment to further enabling the socialization of content across the Web,” MySpace chief executive Owen Van Natta said in a blog post.
“This deal will allow us to leverage imeem’s industry leading technology and over time, meaningfully integrate their products into the MySpace Music experience.”
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Imeem launched in San Francisco in 2003 and became a popular online locale for streaming and sharing music free of charge. Imeem uses an ad-supported model to let users listen to Internet radio or embed songs at websites.
Imeem reported having more than 16 million users worldwide by the time it was bought by MySpace and went offline.
“In the coming weeks, our team will be working to take the aspects of imeem that users love and migrate them to MySpace Music,” Van Natta said.
“We’ll start that transition today by redirecting imeem users to MySpace Music to discover their favorite music.”
MySpace Music provides unlimited, free streaming of music, letting users customize and share playlists at the online social-networking service. MySpace Music is available in Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
California-based MySpace Music claims the most comprehensive catalogue of audio tracks and music videos available online.
Along with free music options, the service enables users to buy songs as digital downloads from Apple’s online iTunes store.
Since being dethroned by Facebook as the world’s most popular online social networking community, News Corp.-owned MySpace has become an Internet venue where musicians famous or obscure can connect with music lovers.
