Who would have thought that this year, perhaps more than any previous, we would still be able to hand out our extremely serious trophies to celebs who have visited these shores over the last 12 months? However, visit the UAE they did and made sure the world knew it by posting all the following images on social media. We thank them for their patronage and hope they remember we only make sport of the ones we love. Let’s see who 2020’s winners are, shall we?
The Liberace certificate for understatement. Never one to shy away from an ego boost (everyone’s favourite actively embraces his King Khan moniker after all) even Shah Rukh Khan was impressed with the size of these birthday wishes beamed onto the Burj Khalifa in November.
The Colgate million-watt smile golden toothbrush. Renowned for his ebullience and repartee, this rare pic of Sanjay Dutt sans trademark grin is an absolute one-off. We don’t know what happened. We can only assume the forty other takes were somehow lost and he and wife Maanayata had to post this somber snap during their September Dubai visit.
The Gigi Hadid coat of many colours. Fashion game recognises game and when US TV host Steve Harvey rolls into town, you know people around the UAE up their style. Just look at this magnificent shot taken in Dubai only two weeks ago: a black velvet jacket, open black shirt and ‘70s tie waist pants; there’s only one contender in this contest, player.
The every expat ever: ‘I’ll only be here for two years’, vanishing promise. Just like many of us Urvashi Rautela probably said to herself: “I’ll go to Dubai, spend a couple of years and move on.” Well the actor and this publication have been on nodding terms for much longer than that now and pics like this combined with making celebrity appearances at the Palazzo Versace on New Year’s Eve say more than words. We know that look too well.
The Rahat Fateh Ali Khan gilded boomerang. Unfortunately the pandemic put paid to the sufi singer receiving his own award this year: managing to cram in only a single 2020 UAE concert. We’re sure he’ll make up for it in the next 12 months. However, former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach will gladly take it off the performer’s hands making her seemingly billionth Dubai landing in early December
The Charlie Chaplin ‘man of few words’ diamond zipper. He’s a martial artist, so we don’t expect too much in the way of conversation, though the amiable Tiger Shroff likes to take ‘strong and silent’ to the nth degree. Keeping it zipped during a December press conference for his fighting championship promotion, at least he takes a good picture.
The Bake Off bronze commemorative bun in the oven. Each year there’s always one pregnant celebrity with whom we embark on the miracle of life and 2020 belongs to Anushka Sharma. Endless updates, photos and captions about the changes make her a deserving recipient, not least for this lovely shot taken in a Palm Jumeirah hotel in September.
The Rihanna sparkly halo for doing no wrong. We can’t help it, pictures by their very nature are a visual medium and visually Mouni Roy’s feed of self promotion is not only a feat (for the person taking those hundreds of pictures), but isn’t half bad to look at either.
