A poignant example of this is the case of Dr Vivien Thomas, an African-American surgical technician who developed procedures used to treat blue baby syndrome in the 1940s. Despite his groundbreaking contributions, Thomas faced significant racial bias, which impacted his recognition and career advancement. Bias issues with Google's AI model Gemini have recently come to light, prompting significant concern. Google's CEO has acknowledged that the model demonstrated bias in its responses, including generating historically inaccurate and culturally insensitive images. This included depictions of racially diverse figures in contexts where it was historically inaccurate, such as Nazi-era soldiers and other historical figures, leading to a public outcry and the temporary suspension of Gemini's image generation capabilities. The controversy has sparked a broader discussion about the challenges of ensuring AI models are free from bias, particularly in how they represent diversity and historical accuracy.
