Time to get free health checks and cancer screenings: The Pink Caravan Ride (PCR) is all set for its 10th edition this month with more than 350 doctors to be stationed at over 70 fixed and mobile clinics, organisers announced on Wednesday.
The pink knights' UAE-wide journey will start on February 26 and continue until March 6.
Some 150 riders will be joining the caravan to spread awareness about breast cancer, as part of the mission set by the Sharjah-based civil society organisation Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP), the team behind the PCR.
Details of the routes, clinic locations, and schedules, as well as an overview of the awareness and advocacy methods to be incorporated this year, were all revealed by the PCR's Higher Steering Committee at a Press conferenceat held on the Flag Island in Sharjah.
The equine ride will begin in Sharjah on February 26 and 27, where it will have 10 stops, before moving to Dubai where it will spend two days visiting four locations. This will be followed by Fujairah and Khorfakkan, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman before concluding in Abu Dhabi.
Reem BinKaram, head of the Pink Caravan's Higher Organising Committee, said: "The ride provides the latest equipment and screening methods which has contributed to the detection of 75 cases so far. Over the years, PCR has provided 64,012 free examinations costing over Dh30 million, and 670 of our volunteer riders have travelled over 1,800km so far."
She said the slogan for the 10th ride, 'Plenty Is Not Enough', confirms that the movement created by the PCR is growing every day.
"We have been able to foster a sense of togetherness that is the crux of the UAE's culture, and enabled the creation of an environment where cancer-related issues are a part of public policy, openly and comfortably discussed, and a part of the national agenda," BinKaram said.
Speaking about the tenth edition, Dr Sawsan Al Madhi, director-general of the FoCP and head of the PCR medical and awareness committee, said: "Within a few years, the Pink Caravan Ride has turned into a huge volunteer campaign resonating around the world, as it is in line with the global need to combat breast cancer. It is also an expression of the culture of cooperation and partnership which prevails in the Emirati society, driving individuals as well as institutions."
