Abu Dhabi Police have fined nearly 3,000 drivers for driving at speeds at or exceeding 200kmph along internal and external roads in Abu Dhabi since the beginning of this year.
They warned residents of the dangerous consequences of driving at high speeds.
Excessive speeds often cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles, impeding their ability to deal with hazardous road situations.
Reduced visibility can lead to traffic accidents, deaths and injuries.
Police have increased road surveillance, with drivers being subject to smart sniper systems and radars.
A video with the title "For your safety #Sniper_on_duty" was published on their Instagram account, showing several drivers caught driving in excess of 200kmph.
Article 34 of the traffic law states that driving at speeds 80 kilometres over the speed limit will incur a Dh3,000 fine, 23 black points, and booking the vehicle for 60 days.
Article 35 stipulates that driving at speeds of 60 kilometres over the speed limit will be fined Dh2,000, given 12 black points, and booking the vehicle for 30 days.
Abu Dhabi police called on young drivers to abide by the prescribed speeds, as they have been identified in accordance with the best practices geared towards enhancing road safety.
Excessive speed accounted for nearly 8 per cent of all serious traffic accidents in Abu Dhabi this year.
Youths were involved in nearly 46 per cent of traffic accidents in Abu Dhabi this year alone.
