Abu Dhabi: Dh3,000 fine for not leaving a safe distance in buses amid Covid

The local authorities in Abu Dhabi are continuing to implement stringent Covid-19 safety measures.

Bus commuters in the Capital have been reminded about a Dh3,000 fine for not ensuring social distancing. They are to follow the alternate seating arrangements in public transport buses.

The penalty is among the many social distancing and safety measures introduced in September by the Abu Dhabi Emergency Crisis and Disasters Committee to be followed in an indoor public place and on public transport means.

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi had placed stickers on alternate seats, alerting commuters to leave the marked seats vacant.

In a bid to further grab the attention of the commuters, the ITC has placed a red-coloured cover on alternate seats with the message: ‘Do not sit here; fine Dh3,000’.

Ensuring a safe return to normalcy

The ITC said it has been taking all necessary precautionary measures since the outbreak of the pandemic. The ITC reiterated that all the steps taken in coordination and cooperation with Abu Dhabi Police and other stakeholders are for the benefit of the community and to ensure a speedy return to normalcy.

“All public buses in Abu Dhabi undergo disinfection after every trip, and extensive sterilisation at night when they return to the depots. All contact surfaces such as ticket vending machines are disinfected on a regular basis to ensure the safety of our passengers.

“This is in addition to following physical distancing in buses and bus stops. Passengers and drivers are obligated to wear face masks and follow the precautionary measures while using public buses to ensure the safety of all during these challenging times,” the ITC said in a statement.
