91 killed in RAK traffic accidents in 2 years

A total of 91 people were killed in traffic accidents in the last two years in Ras Al Khaimah. There were 45 road fatalities in 2018 and 46 such deaths in 2017, according to the Traffic and Patrols Department, RAK Police.

Nine deadly accidents occurred on the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed road in 2017, said Captain Hamad Ali Al Shehi, director of accident investigation and enactment branch at the Traffic and Patrols Department, RAK Police.
Women drivers were involved in two fatal crashes last year as compared to six such accidents in 2017.
Emirati motorists were involved in 13 accidents which claimed 13 lives in 2017 in comparison to 18 mishaps in 2018 that killed 16 people, Captain Shehi pointed out.
Nineteen people sustained minor injuries in 2017 as compared to 21 last year, he said.
Two deadly accidents were registered during inclement weather conditions in 2017 and none in 2018. Twenty mishaps took place in the mornings last year in comparison to 23 in 2017.
"While speeding is blamed for most fatal crashes over the last two years, six happened at a speed of 120kmph in 2018 as compared to 15 at the same speed in 2017."
Six accidents occurred at a speed of 141kmph in 2018 as compared to 15 at the same speed in 2017, he added.
"The emirate's highways witnessed 11 deadly accidents in 2018 as compared to 15 in 2017."
Col Ahmad Al Sam Al Naqbi, acting-director general of the Central Operations Room, RAK Police, said they have competent staff and latest technologies to handle all road accidents efficiently and promptly.
"The latest traffic figures show a significant drop in the casualties from grave accidents last year as compared to 2017."
