The Dubai Police seized 1,126 vehicles last year, of which as many as 191 had accumulated traffic fines of over Dh14,000,000, revealed Brigadier Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation. The police also confiscated 76 vehicles for reckless driving and 38 cars for causing blatant noise in 2018.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic last year issued 11,682 traffic violations, ranging from endangering the lives of road users and changing of lanes to not wearing seat belts, making sudden turns and changing the colour of the vehicle without permission. The revenue generated from changing the vehicle's colour in 2018 exceeded Dh12 million.
Al Jallaf said that Dubai succeeded in ensuring security of the individuals and society, and effectively used advanced artificial intelligence techniques to arrest the criminals and "wanted" persons.
He said that the Dubai Police recorded 39 hit-and-run accidents in 2018, which resulted in eight deaths, five serious injuries, nine serious and medium injuries, and 17 minor injuries.
Colonel Adel Al Joker, director of the Criminal Investigation Department at the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation, stressed that the police must spread awareness on key issues by joining hands with various local media organisations.
He said that there were some cases where lenient parents let their teenage children drive cars without a driver's licence. Some don't monitor their kids as they carry out modifications in their vehicles, which may be life-threatening for the motorist as well as other road users, he warned.
