The UAE is a shopper’s paradise, particularly Dubai, and it is easy to get caught in a web of impressive sales that offer deep discounts on valued brands and products. From emailers and SMSes to ads, retailers are sure to catch your attention through one medium or the other.

Now with flash sales, and three shopping festivals (Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah) happening in full swing, we offer a few tips that will help you get the value for your money without going on a guilt trip. Spend it well:

>> List it: A little discipline helps. Identifying what we need (and desire) is the first step towards avoiding the overindulgence trap. So, list it — first the things you want and then gifts you might want to give to your friends and family in the next two-three months, for instance. We often end up spending more when buying on impulse or when hard pressed on time. Securing bargains and discounts is easy when you know what you are looking for, especially during flash sales and shopping festivals.

>> Online bargains: The burgeoning online space in the UAE has made online shopping lucrative. Even if you are in a mall, vying for a product, it pays to quickly do a search online and check. Many a time, retailers offer extra discounts for online shoppers.

>> Corporate discounts: Many corporates have tie-ups with firms that allow extra discounts for their employees when they go shop. Maintain a list of such discounts and align it when possible.

>> Credit cards: Don’t apply for any credit card; understand your spending pattern and secure a card that can help you get extra discounts or cash back. The banking industry in the UAE is brimming with offers that can help you get the most out of your spending.

>> Less is more: We have all been taught a lesson on minimalism this year, and we would do well to remember it. To stay focused and spend on things and experiences you treasure, delist and unsubscribe from the websites that haven’t been of much use in the last 10 months or so. Ignorance is bliss, sometimes.
