A woman, who was caught working at a men's massage centre, faced trial on Monday in the Court of First Instance on a prostitution charge.
The 27-year-old Bangladeshi woman was arrested in Abu Dhabi following an inspection visit by a municipality officer on April 7.
"As an assistant inspector in the Abu Dhabi municipality my duties consist of making inspection visits at shops to look for any violations.
"In one of my inspections, there was a centre which is a men's spa. A Chinese man was at the reception and other Indians were spotted in the corridor," the Emirati inspector from Abu Dhabi municipality said.
"They all dispersed and disappeared the moment I showed them my official card. As I inspected the centre I found it had several rooms. There were four women in two rooms. I called the police and reported the centre. There were beds and massage tools and the women failed to produce any IDs or documents to prove they were legal residents."
The criminal data base showed the defendant was reported absconding from her sponsor in Sharjah on March 20, last year, and she was not sponsored by the woman she claimed had brought her to the UAE.
The accused claimed during public prosecution investigation in Abu Dhabi that she entered the country with a visit visa with the help of her countrywoman who lived in Ajman. The latter had allegedly told her she would work as a housemaid but she later forced her into prostitution in Dubai.
She claimed she used to have sex with men but did not get any money for that. She managed to run away to Abu Dhabi until she was caught at a massage centre. She denied having worked in prostitution there.
