A vendor has been sentenced to six months in jail by a Dubai court on an attempted murder charge after he tried to kill a compatriot.
The 22-year-old Sudanese man denied the charge at the Court of First Instance. He denied having had the intention to kill the victim, claiming he was provoked after he was insulted.
The court ordered him to pay a Dh 3,000 fine.
The incident took place on October 29, 2017.
The 51-year-old complainant, a driver, said the defendant was his roommate. "He assaulted me around 1.15pm, following a verbal brawl, at our accommodation in Naif area.
He stabbed me in the chest and back with a vegetable knife."
A police corporal said they received a report about a problem in Freej Al Murar, Naif area.
"We moved to the flat in the first floor. The victim told us he entered the kitchen where the accused was cooking and holding a knife. They had an altercation following which the victim got stabbed twice in the chest and back. He was rushed by ambulance to the hospital."
During questioning at the police station, the defendant confessed he stabbed the victim with a knife, claiming he was provoked after he was insulted. But he said he did not mean to kill the victim.
The stab wound the victim received in the chest was deep and critical and could have been fatal had it not been for the quick medical intervention, as per the forensic report.
The court ruling has been appealed.
