The Sharjah Criminal Court has sentenced an Asian man to six months in jail to be followed by deportation for biting an Arab woman on her cheeks and assaulting her as he tried to steal her bag.
The victim, who testified before the court, said the incident took place as she was heading home after shopping around 12.30am in Sharjah's Abu Shagara area. She said the accused first stopped her and enquired about directions to a grocery shop. When the woman told him the location, the man thanked her and went on his way.
However, he turned back and requested for Dh10 from her. As the woman tried to hear him out, the man suddenly pounced on her and took her unawares. He started biting her cheeks and forehead, while repeatedly assaulting her.
The man grabbed the bag and fled with it, the victim told the court. She added the next day, the accused called the victim's sister from the stolen mobile phone. He asked her about the home address so he could return the handset. The victim's sister called him a "liar" and immediately informed the police who started monitoring his calls. When the man called her again, his phone was tapped. The cops immediately figured out the call's location, ambushed the man and arrested him.
