A woman stood trial the Ras Al Khaimah Misdemeanour Court on charges of sharing a video of her brother's second wedding ceremony without the consent of his divorced wife, who was shown in the footage.
The video showed her brother's ex-wife insulting, assaulting and threatening her mother in front of a wedding hall here in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. She didn't follow due procedures and guidelines to share the clip with her mother and brother.
The Asian staff, who helped the woman get a copy of the wedding video, was also facing the same charges in the lawsuit.
The defendant told the court she did not mean anything criminal and did not share the video with anyone but her brother to show him that his ex-wife did assault their mother during his second wedding.
The sister's defence lawyer took the same plea, denying any planned criminal intent.
The Asian staff, a technician, said he could not refuse the request of a family member about copying the wedding video, contending that he did not know that sharing a clip recorded by a security camera is illegal without seeking approval from the parties.
The court ordered adjournment of the case to next Sunday for issuing its verdict.
How the case unfolded
Court records showed that the case unfolded when the divorced woman was referred to RAK Public Prosecution for beating the mother of her ex-husband and threatening to deprive her from seeing her grandchildren. The mother had presented the video that her daughter shared as part of the evidence.
As per the sheet of indictment, the divorced woman had lodged a police complaint against the mother. The RAK Public Prosecution charged her for insulting and using bad words against her son's first wife (the defendant) on the phone in front of the wedding hall where the marriage of her son was being held.
The two litigants appeared in the court where both denied the charges.
The defence lawyer asked the court to clear his client saying that the charges are baseless and fabricated.
"There is not a single proof that my client had threatened the mother of her former husband."
"The mother's statement that my client had beaten her up are in contradiction of her earlier statement before the RAK police and prosecution that my client did not assault her."
"There is not a single witness of the alleged threat, abuse or assault."
On the other hand, the mother's lawyer told the court that the defendant forced open the car where his client was sitting, insulted and assaulted her.
"She used abusive words in text messages too," he said, asking the court to get a report from the telecommunications regulatory authority about the same.
The lawyer added that she assaulted and insulted my client (husband's mother), and threatened to deprive her from seeing her grandchildren claiming that the mother was the main reason behind her divorce.
The divorced woman lodged another case against her ex-husband's sister for sharing the wedding video. It was after this that the sister had to appear in the  Ras Al Khaimah Misdemeanour Court.
