A waiter, who was accused of stealing Dh3,500 worth of revenues from the restaurant where he worked, has been sentenced to three months in jail and deportation by the Dubai Court of First Instance.
The court earlier heard how the 25-year-old Nepalese waiter cut the power to the restaurant's surveillance cameras and then stole the money from the cash register and a bag.
The incident happened on December 5 last year and was reported at Al Qusais police station.
"I could not find the briefcase, in which I usually keep the revenues of the shop. It was around 11am on December 5 last year. I rang my colleague to ask him whether he had seen it. But I got surprised as he was also looking for the key of the cash register," a 33-year-old Indian cashier said during the public prosecution investigation.
The cashier then checked the camera footage which captured the waiter holding the money briefcase.
"It was then around 6.30am. I saw him heading towards the cash register, which he opened with the key and took the money inside the register and in the briefcase. He took a total amount of Dh3,500. The waiter disconnected the power off the surveillance cameras," the witness said.
He told the prosecutor that the waiter returned on December 8 to their accommodation where he confessed to the theft.
"He asked for settlement with the business owner. He said he was willing to pay back what he stole."
During the police interrogation and public prosecution investigation, the accused admitted to the charge.
The ruling has been appealed.
