A 22-year-old Asian expat has stood trial at the Sharjah Criminal Court for allegedly possessing 40kg of crystal meth, which he had hidden in a pile of iron bars at a scrap yard in the emirate.
When he was confronted with the accusation in court, the defendant claimed he didn't know that the substance was a kind of narcotics. He said his partner at work requested him to receive the items and asked him to hand them over to someone, providing a phone number.
The young man said he had been arrested before he got to call the number.
According to police records, the anti-narcotics department received a tip-off regarding the presence of drugs at the scrap yard in Sharjah Industrial Area 12.
As soon as they got the information, the police searched the site and found the crystal meth under the iron bars.
Authorities arrested the accused and referred the case to the public prosecution, which charged him with illegal possession of drugs.
