Indian expatriates in the UAE are gearing up to celebrate the nation’s 72nd Republic Day on January 26. However, Indian diplomatic missions and community groups have said celebrations will be scaled down this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of India in Dubai will organise customary flag hoisting ceremonies, but expatriates are encouraged to join everyone virtually through social media platforms.
The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi announced on its Twitter feed: “Factoring in the #Covid19 pandemic, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi would like to inform you all with a heavy heart that in-person celebration of 72nd Republic Day would not be possible this time.” It added: “We encourage everyone to join us virtually through our social media platforms.”
Indian Ambassador to the UAE Pavan Kapoor and the Consul General of India in Dubai Dr Aman Puri will be hoisting the Indian flags at the Embassy and the Consulate, respectively, which will be followed by both diplomatic heads reading out the Indian President’s address to the nation.
As it is customary every year, the Republic Day parade will also be held at the Indian High School. However, the event will be conducted at a significantly reduced scale. Dr Aman Puri will unfurl the Indian flag on the school campus.
“A small scale, in-campus event at a significantly reduced scale will be hosted with numbers limiting it to only 150 people on campus, including participating students,” explained Punit MK Vasu, CEO – the Indian High Group of Schools.
He added: “Given the current health and safety regulations, the remaining students and staff and the parent community will be invited to join the celebrations virtually. Dr Puri will lead the flag unfurling ceremony followed by cultural performances by students of all three campuses.”
He underlined: “For 60 years, the Indian High School has celebrated this day and this year we are launching 60@50@2020, which is the launch of our Diamond Jubilee year along with the Golden Jubilee of the UAE and Dubai hosting Expo 2020.”
