Four people were injured in a road accident involving three vehicles at Al Rams area in the north of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. The mishap was blamed on the malfunctioning traffic signal at the entrance of the busy historic city.
It was the fourth time this month that the traffic signal broke down despite its regular maintenance, said Col Ahmed Al Sam, acting director of the traffic and patrols department of the RAK Police.
The Central Operations Room, on being alerted about the accident, dispatched traffic patrols, medics and an ambulance to the scene. The busy intersection was at once completely blocked by the patrols to fix the fault.
The three passengers injured were given first aid on the spot, and were shifted to the nearest hospital. A team from the department of public works and services rushed to the site and replaced the digital LED traffic lights and power cables with new ones to avoid disruption of service again.
"We blocked the signal and prevented any vehicle from making a U-Turn from the middle of the intersection. Also the side U-Turn before the intersection was blocked to curb traffic snarls and road accidents," Col Sam said.
