Authorities recently launched a crackdown on illegal power connections across Sharjah's villas and residences.
The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) and the Sharjah Prevention and Safety Authority formed a special committee to lead inspections, take actions against violators and raise awareness of the dangers that come with such connections.
Dr Rashid Al Leem, chairman of Sewa, said random and illegal electrical connections pose serious hazards to the community as these lack the safety features all power lines must have.
"We have launched massive awareness programmes to educate the residents about these risks, but some are found violating the rules and tampering with services," Al Leem said.
During the rainy season in particular, improperly connected wires could spark catastrophes, he said.
Drilling wells without the permission of Sewa is also strictly prohibited, Al Leem added. "Tampering with natural sources is certainly not acceptable in our culture."
Violators who will be caught during inspections will be given a grace period to comply with regulations.
As Sewa carries out inspections and awareness drives, the authority is also working hard to efficiently distribute power and water to Sharjah residents. Ensuring the safety and security of everyone in the emirate is part of its mandate from His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Al Leem said.
